چکیده

Background Based on laboratory studies performed through decades, it is suggested that carbohydrate intake during prolonged exercise improves performance. However, we do not know much about whether marathon race performance in practice can be improved by intervening with a scientifically based nutritional strategy. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that a marathon race can be completed faster by applying a scientifically based nutritional strategy than by applying a freely chosen nutritional strategy.

Psychological Crisis in a Marathon and the Buffering Effects of Self-Verbalizations

In the present study, we investigated the effects of psychological crises on goal striving and the buffering effects of self-verbalizations in the context of a marathon race. Study 1 showed that during a marathon, a psychological crisis—which is characterized by a strong impulse of goal disengagement and thoughts about benefits and costs—occurred at about Kilometer 30 and that this crisis had n...

The effect of lecithin supplementation on plasma choline concentrations during a marathon.

BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that plasma and urinary free choline concentrations decrease significantly during a marathon, and that these decreases may be associated with decreased performance. OBJECTIVE In a pilot study, we sought to determine whether lecithin supplementation prior to a marathon would maintain plasma free and urinary choline concentrations and improve performance v...

Pre-race dietary carbohydrate intake can independently influence sub-elite marathon running performance.

We examined whether selected anthropometric and nutritional factors influenced field-based marathon running performance. An internet-based data collection tool allowed competitors in the 2009 London Marathon (n=257, mean ± SD age: 39 ± 8 years, finish time: 273.8 ± 59.5 min) to record a range of anthropometric, training and nutritional predictors. Multivariate statistical methods were used to q...

The rewarding effect of flow experience on performance in a marathon race

Objectives: This research aimed to shed light on the relationship between flow experience and perfor mance in sports using a marathon race as an example. We hypothesized that flow influences the marathon race performance by an indirect rewarding effect. We assumed that the positive quality of flow experience rewards the pre race running activity and thereby enhances training behavior which agai...

Branched-chain amino acid supplementation during a 100-km ultra-marathon--a randomized controlled trial.

Ultra-marathon running is supposed to increase the parameters of skeletal muscle damage and impair renal function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of branched-chain amino acid supplementation on skeletal muscle damage and renal function during a 100-km ultra-marathon. Twenty-eight athletes were randomly divided into two groups, one group using branched-chain amino acid s...
